Who We Are:

Since its founding in 1865, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers has actively fought to improve our members’ quality of life – on and off the job – through access to fair wages, good benefits, safe working conditions, and solidarity among members.

Today, we represent the most highly skilled trowel trades craftworkers across the United States and Canada including bricklayers, stone and marble masons, cement masons, plasterers, tile setters, terrazzo and mosaic workers, and pointers/ cleaners/ caulkers. With over a century of protecting the rights of our workers, BAC is the oldest continuous union in North America.

Building Masonry's Future

What does the future hold for the masonry industry? Several hundred designers and builders got a glimpse at some possible new directions, at the IMI Mew Products Expo this September at the BAC/IMI John J. Flynn International Training Center in Bowie, Maryland.

For the inaugural event, IMI invited representatives of some promising new products that reflect the variety of BAC skills and complement sustainability goals, including terra cotta, ceramic and stone facade systems, flowable terrazzo, concrete flooring, insulated concrete forms, autoclaved aerated concrete, and grout products Also included was a seminar on new masonry design software.

While some products are familiar lo some BAC contractors, the objective is to make everyone more comfortable embracing new technologies. Proper installation is critical to the success of any new product. Having vendors and IMI training experts walk through each product's installation process and answer questions provides the critical confidence in proper installation - for both designers as well as contractors. Attendees experienced how it comes from IMI training, exemplified by The Flynn Center.

Masonry's competitive future depends on creating new opportunities and embracing new technologies. The September event gave hundreds of architects, engineers, contractors and construction managers an opportunity to get a look at promising products & systems.

The NJ New Products Expo is coming in early 2009. We need to investigate new products to remain competitive in today's market.

Forty BAC-ADC of New Jersey Craftworkers Mentor Architectural Students In Competition

Masonry Contractors of NJMasonry Contractors of New Jersey

Masonry Contractors of New Jersey sponsors an annual Masonry Design/Build Competition at NJIT School of Architecture in Newark, NJ. Co-sponsored by the BAC ADC of New Jersey Labor Management Fund and the International Masonry Institute, architectural students this year were given an assignment to design a public pool and community center for the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY and then build, IN ONLY 2 DAYS, a mock up of a critical masonry element.

A total of 130 students, divided into nine teams, were required to research and explore various masonry materials. Students then selected one design from each team and collaborated with masonry professionals to complete the project design and order masonry materials. All masonry materials were donated by members of Masonry Contractors of New Jersey.

On April 5th and April 6th on the promenade leading to the School of Architecture, forty BAC ADC Craftworkers mentored the students on the parameters of the selected masonry materials and proper installation techniques. By working directly with the craftworkers as the mock ups were built the students gained a better understanding of the trade; a lesson that all three sponsoring organizations expect the students will remember throughout their careers.

A panel of distinguished Judges evaluated the mock-ups and design boards and watched student presentations before announcing winning teams at a dinner banquet on April 7th. For more information visit our web site at www.mcofnj.org. To request a free DVD of the competition please call Masonry Contractors of New Jersey at (609) 324-1140.
